Sock Yarn Dyeing Workshop November 10th

$55.00

Cost: $55 plus $35 materials fee. Additional skeins available for purchase. $15/each full skein and $5 each mini skein.

When: Sunday November 10th from 1PM to 4PM (if you want to dye additional skeins, we will be doing that from 4PM to 5PM

Where: 43 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, NY (Studio side)

Join us at the Rigby Handcraft studio to learn how to dye your own sock yarn! Hand dyeing wool and yarn is a time honored craft that spans the centuries, especially in places without rainbow sheep (all places). This class will provide the foundational knowledge and skills in order to open the door to the world of hand dyeing. Students will learn the basics of dyeing wool and wool blends with acid dye while the pans heat up. We’ll then begin with kettle dyeing a semi-solid main color (full skein of sock yarn) in your choice of two colors (pictured here). The class will then collaborate on a variegated mini skein contrast color using a pour over technique. Students who would like to dye additional skeins are welcome to stay an extra hour to do so. There will be significant down time while we wait for each dye pot to heat up, so feel free to bring a knitting project or something to work on!

Materials fee includes PPE, equipment use, and a full and mini skein of yarn. Additional skeins will be available for purchase at the workshop. Please bring your materials fee to class to pay directly to the instructor at the start of class.

More info will be sent one week prior to class, but feel free to email me at emilierigby@gmail.com with any questions!

This class is taught by Lizz Murdock (Murdock meaning “sea warrior” or, more poetically, “from the dark sea”). She is the owner and dyer at Dark Sea Yarn, located in the Leatherstocking Region of New York. She likes to take on too many projects and has always had an affinity for color. In addition to dyeing yarn, she enjoys knitting, writing, baking, and murder mysteries.
